The fastest-ever speed registered by a Formula 1 car was a blistering 231.5 mph (372.6 kph), which Juan Pablo Montoya and his McLaren-Mercedes achieved during testing in 2005. Now, if you’re having trouble picturing what it might look like to be standing still while something flies past you at those speeds, the Bugatti Chiron has you covered.
The footage you’re about to see was captured back in December on a two-lane road in Portugal, and while it’s obviously impossible to verify the accuracy of the car’s velocity, this Chiron was allegedly matching that McLaren-Mercedes F1 car in doing 231 mph - and on a public road no less.
According to the uploader, the exact speed was 373 kph, which is 231.7 mph. That’s remarkably fast, not to mention dangerous given the whereabouts.
People on Reddit, however, aren’t convinced the Chiron was actually going that fast, suggesting its real speed was probably closer to 180 mph (290 kph), given how quickly it had to brake for that right-hand turn.
Then again, during its 2017 world-record-setting run, the Chiron needed just 9.4 seconds in order to come to a complete standstill after hitting 249 mph (400 kph). In this video, the French hypercar is simply seen slowing down to a lesser speed, not a complete standstill, so theoretically, it should have had enough time to decelerate for the turn, not to mention enough room.
Let's put it this way: the eye test says that this Chiron had roughly 100 meters (109 yards) or so to go until reaching the turn, a little more than the length of a football field.
On paper, the Bugatti Chiron would have needed no more than 13.6 seconds to hit 186 mph from zero (less if it was already moving). Its power comes from an 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 unit, producing 1,479 hp (1,500 PS) and 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. The top speed is electronically limited to 261 mph (420 kph).
